This Coolamon Ring Pad known as an "akartne" in Arrernte Aboriginal language was traditionally made of possum and/or plaited human hair, grass leaves or feathers. It was placed on the women's heads to act as a comfort between the woman's head and the coolamon when carrying heavy objects or traveling over large distances.
